LOON LAKE

SURVEYS AND MILFOIL CONTROL

Loon Lake is a 1,100-acre located in Stevens County, Washington at an elevation of 2,382 ft. the lake is about two miles wide, one mile long, and has a maximum depth of 100 feet.

Loon Lake is a popular destination for water-based recreation including swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, sailing, water skiing and jet-skiing.

Eurasian Watermilfoil was first discovered in Loon Lake in 1995. In 1999, the Lake Management District was formed in order to combat this invasive species. The Loon Lake residents have recognized the presence of Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) since 1996.

In 2007 Lakeland Restoration Services began an aggressive two year campaign to significantly reduce the amount of EWM in Loon Lake a special effort was made to treat around boat docks and shallow beaches. Using airboats specifically designed to maneuver between the docks and along shallow beaches to apply herbicides at proper rates to achieve control. Diver surveys were conducted to pinpoint the exact location of the plants.

By 2010, EWM populations in areas previously treated were complete controlled. Lakeland Restorations Services with the direction of the Loon Lake LMD Board performed a whole lake Yellow Flag Iris treatment. This treatment significantly reduced the invasive plant and allowed native vegetation to re-inhabit the riparian areas of the lake.

LRS has continued to work with the Loon Lake LMD Board and Commissioner over the past several years providing prompt and accurate service to Stevens County conducting successful aquatic and riparian restoration projects. We look forward to ongoing restoration projects at Loon Lake.
